Curriculum
Students will train in three different aspects presented throughout the courses. All three courses offered at FSHS will include Classroom Instruction (25%) including lecture/discussion, video presentation, quizes, and testing; Forging Instruction and Practice (25%) including demonstration and hands-on instruction; and Live Horse Trimming and Shoeing (50%) including demonstration and hands-on instruction.
Introduction to Horseshoeing (Six Weeks or 288 clock hours)* ¶ Anatomy & physiology of lower equine limb (40 hours) ¶ Farrier industry history with product identification (5hours) ¶ Business Practices - Farrier/Client relations and Farrier/Vetrinarians relations (15 hours) ¶ Shop safety (5 hours) ¶ Modifying pre-made shoes (73 hours) ¶ Horse Handling and Safety / Trimming (70 hours) ¶ Incorporating forging skills at the horse learned during shop instruction (75 hours) ¶ Conformation and gait analysis and evaluating soundness (5 hours) Basic Horseshoeing Course (Eight Weeks or 384 clock hours)* ¶ Anatomy & physiology of lower equine limb (60 hours) ¶ Farrier industry history with product identification (7 hours) ¶ Business Practices - Farrier/Client relations and Farrier/Vetrinarians relations (20 hours) ¶ Independent Study & Practice (20 hours) ¶ Shop safety (8 hours) ¶ Modifying pre-made shoes and fabrication of hand-made shoes (70 hours) ¶ Horse Handling and Safety / Trimming ( 90hours) ¶ Incorporating forging skills at the horse learned during shop instruction (60 hours) ¶ Conformation and gait analysis and evaluating soundness (7 hours) ¶ Practice on skills learned under horse (42 hours) Advanced Horseshoeing Course (Twelve Weeks or 576 clock hours) ¶ Anatomy & physiology of lower equine limb (80 hours) ¶ Farrier industry history with product identification (10 hours) ¶ Business Practices - Farrier/Client relations and Farrier/Vetrinarians relations (35 hours) ¶ Independent Study & Practice (29 hours) ¶ Shop safety (10 hours) ¶ Modifying pre-made shoes and fabrication of hand-made shoes (110 hours) ¶ Horse Handling and Safety / Trimming (80 hours) ¶ Incorporating forging skills at the horse learned during shop instruction (130 hours) ¶ Conformation and gait analysis and evaluating soundness (15 hours) ¶ Practice on skills learned under horse (77 hours)
